The parking wizards at San Francisco International are at it again. They have a 3200 space garage that has been closed for three months (it was a garage that was reserved for employees). The reason, not enough employees. So they are spending $12 million to refurbish it for long term parking. Note that the current long term parking facilities (surface) are only about 70% filled on most days.
What are they going to do with the surface lots? Of course, turn them in to employee parking.
If you think this makes little sense. Well……. The argument seems to be that as an industry the airlines are suffering, so traffic is down and also employment. So they don’t need the space for employees, but need it for travelers who are flying on the planes that are not begin used so employees have to be laid off.
Not really – Could it be that airlines are in fact pushing more people through the air than ever before but are doing it with fewer ground staff? They have reduced the number of planes but are running them at a higher occupancy rate?
Maybe SFO needs to take a lesson from the airlines and begin to run a little leaner.
Perhaps they should just let the free market take care of their parking. When they fill, the off airport companies will take the overflow. AND maybe more people will make use of that new BART station or other means to get to the airport.
